LIP ART WITH THE MASTER
Chronicles of a Makeup Artist...
VLADA'S LIP ART MASTER CLASS
Recently through Mecca Cosmetica (which I'm lucky to work for as a colour specialist), I entered into a competition on Instagram which was judged by the amazing Vlada, where we had to design an eye look which was inspired by Vlada's work. (If you've never heard of Vlada or seen her work, you may of heard about the brand she works alongside with, Smashbox. A super cool brand that has its finger on the pulse and its gaze across fashion). Check out my entry here. Forty participants were chosen from around Australia to take part in a workshop with Vlada herself, where she would take us through her process of her legendary lip art.
The first thing I want to mention, is how lovely Vlada is. She is down to earth, very welcoming and completely sharing of her knowledge and expertise. She opened up her kit and shared some stuff straight out of it with us.. How fab is that? Watching her work was amazing, her attention to detail is exceptional and she does something with lip art on herself, everyday. I thought that was awesome, in itself. Staying dedicated to your craft is important and helps keep your inspiration flowing.
Myself alongside five other Mecca lovelies got the chance to help the PR team on the morning of the workshop, while Vlada went through her process with some of Sydney's top bloggers and influencers. So essentially I got to see two different looks and processes that Vlada did, in one day. Did I mention how lucky I am? Everyone had the chance to create their own lip art masterpiece after Vlada showed us her work. Watching everyones interpretation was amazing! After doing my own lip art, it's funny how watching someone work (especially when they do it all the time), and it looks incredibly easy, how hard some things really are! Props to Vlada cause it aint easy!!
I took inspiration from one of her new campaign looks for the "Be Legendary liquid lips". She had all sorts of lips and art on the wall but I really loved one lip in particular which compared to most of the other lip art, was more simple (but just as amazing) in its design. It was an ombre lip look and it was only done with the liquid lip colours. No beads, crystals or anything fancy.
So I used that as my starting point and added the fun crystals we had on hand to create my lip art. I would like to give a huge shout out to my model, Emily. This was not an easy task to do, you had to keep very still for long periods of time which in theory sounds easy, right? It is not, let me tell you. Having someone place gems onto your lips which you can't move, talk or close your mouth was a big challenge for all the models but of course they all passed with flying colours! So again dear Em, THANK YOU!
This was such a awesome day for all of us involved, we all learnt so much about this very cool process and even though this is not something that you'll see me do on a regular basis, Vlada taught me lots of little things that I can incorporate into what I do and hey, when I want to do a major lip project in the future... what an inspiration! We also had a professional photographer take photos behind the scenes and of our finished work. How fab is that?
I would like to thank Vlada for coming out to Australia and teaching us some of her tips and tricks and also, BIG THANKS and LOVE to Mecca for allowing us this opportunity to learn from one of the best in the industry as well as Smashbox for helping this happen.
Peace, love & light
