WHAT IS CLEAN MAKEUP?

Chronicles of a Makeup Artist...

Have you ever heard of clean makeup or if you have, do you know what clean makeup means? If you don't (lets face it, unless your in the beauty industry, why would you?), think of a skin care ad where the model looks fresh with no makeup on, right? Wrong! She has what you call "no makeup, makeup" or clean makeup. It's one of the hardest looks to master because you need a certain skill and eye for detail to know how, when and where with techniques, placement of products etc because you want everything to look beautiful and seamless. You need to know when to pull back and when you can kick it up a notch. Even then, it needs to be so soft and subtle and look like there is nothing there. Enhancing everything with nothing. Or more precisely, making it look like there is nothing. You can use as many or as few products as you like to get this sort of look and the beauty of being an artist is I get to play and find out what this magic formula is.  I have spent a lot of time over the last five years really focusing on this side of beauty with clean skin work. I still have a way to go but I can see my hard work has paid off because not only is this type of makeup one of my favourites to do, but I feel confidant in being able to perfect the base without relying on Photoshop to fix any mistakes.

I set myself a goal last year and that was to start putting Women of Colour (WOC) in my book. So with this in mind, when photographer Charlie Octavia brought her portfolio building session to Sydney, I went on a mission to find as many models as I could do in a session all with clean makeup. I wanted to test myself and my skills at colour theory and colour matching. It was a fun shoot, I really enjoyed working with all of these amazing girls and I was really excited when we got the proofs back because each model was really happy with their shots. Yay! I love these photo's as well and I love that I can see where I need to improve my skill set and eye. Always learning!!

I wished I could have found more WOC for this shoot but the models that came and worked with me were all completely professional and really lovely to work alongside. The fact that they rocked it in front of the camera was even better.

SOME   OF   MY   FAVOURITE   PRODUCTS   I   USED

I also prepped each models skin with a hydrating face sheet mask. The better the skin prep done before makeup, the better the skin looks and feels (juicy!) and the makeup will sit beautifully on it. I adore skin work, giving a mini facial massage to help absorb any excess of the mask before going in with your chosen products on top will always be beneficial to your applications. This is something nice to do for yourself too, when your going out by prepping your skin with a mask. Go on, spoil yourself..

Peace, love & light

p.s. Funny story about this shoot. I had to work all day and couldn't be at the session to start on my models till 5.30pm. I had roughly two hours to paint faces with the last girl on set and ready to shoot by 7.30pm and be finished by 8pm.

THE LOW DOWN…

All the products listed here, I purchased myself. These are my own personal opinions on these products and how I use them.

This is not a paid product placement and I don't get paid if you click on the links. I made it easy for you incase you want to look a little closer at something. Except for TML. I am a reseller for The Makeup Light here in Australia so if you buy one, I'll get paid for that!
